Yes.  He might have been talking about the motor whine for gear up and down
(that was my assumption).  I know it can be heard clearly as a passenger, if
you happen to be sitting right over the wings, but I'm not sure about from the
cockpit.  My guess is no, for the same reason that you can't hear the screech.
