I figured that I'd take the pictures myself at whatever resolution makes
sense. It's a good excuse to go flying. :-)

So, assuming that I have a TIFF or a JPEG, where do I go next?

I couldn't figure out what image format was used in the
KSJC-Photo-2.0.tar.gz archive(w122n37). I also noticed that the image
appears to be divided into segments of around 789k.

What format are the images in? Is this something that I can do with The
Gimp and a text editor? Is there a prebuilt tool for segmenting the
image and aligning them with the other scenery?

I'm struggling to get the down payment together for a Cessna 150...
Flightgear is a lot cheaper!
