FWIW, the autopilot on Boeing airliners flies the elevator. The elevator trim then repositions the stabilizer to take the aerodynamic load off of the controls. As was mentioned earlier, the trim runs slowly (about one-fourth the manual trim rate) and lags a bit, so if you disengage the autopilot while the airplane is accelerating you will have some residual out-of-trim force on the control. If you let the airplane's speed stabilize for a few seconds with autopilot on, then disengaginging the autopilot leaves a trimmed control.
