What do I need to do to make lighting on scenery visible over more that
very short distances?

I've been designing a few objects in blender, converted them to AC3D, then
edited the material properties to have "emis 1 0 0", which gives a bright
red light, as expected, however you need to fly extremely close to the
object before the lights are visible. Airfield and "city" lighting appears
at much longer ranges - is there any way to get a similar range for
anti-collision lights on large structures?
