Are you sure 1. and 2. are separate areas ? Is the copy specified in OpenGL ?
After I submitted the first patch, I noticed 2 white splash in a row, then I removed the delete and the clear of the pointer and the white splash disappeared.
I am quite sure about this.
But it doesn't really matter anymore because I've changed my mind on not applying your second patch. As it stands now it is only used for the splash screen (one texture) and if it will be used for something else in the future it is for very special cases (where plib can't handle it).
So the extra memory consumption would be marginal.
