The Great Lakes are not the Ocean which is what GSHHS was designed to portray :-) FWIW Adding a *much* better Great Lakes coastline is relatively easy todo. The tricky part is getting the river mouths to line up between the GSHHS and whateser hi-res data one wants to insert Also note that a higher res Great Lakes Boubdary might not correspond well with the lowres roads that one gets from the vmap0.
