It depends on the aircraft. A light trainer like the Piper Cherokee or the Cessna 172 typically allows only about a foot of variation in the location of the CG along the longitudinal axis (though, unfortunately, pilots often exceed that). That's enough to show up visually, but only just barely -- the main place it would be noticable would be landing with the nosewheel low.


A big airliner, on the other hand, can have a CG variation much larger, and that might be very noticeable. If we're going to solve this problem for the 747, we might as well solve it for the 172 the same way.
