I use a lot of simple text display instruments, primarily for the mini-panel,
to display data, and often combine this with browsing the property tree as
well.

I figured that it probably wouldn't be too difficult to create 3D instruments
that do the same thing, at least once I'd set up a 'template' instrument I
could adapt, but can I still control things from a 3D instrument?

For example, I've started using a text AP speed control instrument that lets
me switch between kias and mach speed hold, and change the appropriate AP
settings - that is the target kias/mach. Similarly, I've been playing around
with different AP alt-hold modes and have set up another text instrument that
lets me switch between them.

I've gone for text instruments in the hope that it would have the lowest
overhead - no textures apart from the simple background colouring and nothing
to animate.

Ultimately though, I agree that the aim has got to be for a 3D cockpit, with
3D instruments, for proper flying.
