I'm thinking more in terms of named pipes/fifo sockets...
right, whatever comes to your mind that serves the ultimate purpose
to enable dynamic extendability :-)
But the costs are adding all the dlopen stuff.
I don't know of platforms other than Unix/Win32 either,
but talking of these two platforms it's not really that
involved to load a library and execute a set of functions
or passing parameters, that was not even considered a
problem by other developers here - in the end one could
even use a cross-platform plugin library in order to take
care of differences amongst platforms, the first that
comes to my mind would be "korelib" from "thekompany.com",
don't have any experience about Mac development, though-
so don't know if that lib also works easily on a Mac.
Not sure if the other platforms make it easier here.

I wasn't preferring (binary library based) plugins
in particular but rather the thread was about adding general
means to dynamically extend FG, be it by using a more
powerul scripting interface, using binary libraries or
whatever.
And that's something that could ultimately benefit
various projects that would need to interface with
FlightGear.
