Aha! That cured it - thanks Eric. Everything works perfectly now except the "clicking" of the looping tone. The clicking is not of a constant volume either, sometimes it's hard and sometimes soft. An ugly way of reducing it's annoyance factor is to just make the sample a lot longer - like a couple of minutes. :) Anyway I won't worry about it at the moment.
