OK, I give up! Unzipped .tgz into 'Models' directory of colditz glider. Moved the .rgb and .ac files to the 'Models' directory itself (they were in a 'Colditz' subdirectory otherwise). Checked that 'colditz-set.xml' mentioned Models/colditz.ac (it did). Ran fgfs. No 3D model. What did I do wrong please?
