I have tested with vsync on and off. On balance vsync on seems to make the
situation worse. I have also tried throttling the frame rate: this
definitely is counterproductive, noticeably increasing the frequency and
magnitude of the hesitations.

One significant difference is that the Buccaneer has no malformed listeners
in its Nasal so the gain in correcting this bug would, I think, be marginal.
