Well, to be fair that's to preserve binary compatibility. I work around that trivially be ensuring -framework ALUT comes before - framework OpenAL on my link command. But, the whole situation is a bit of a mess. Apple aren't helping, but they aren't actively trying to be awkward (is my perception) - it's just very unclear what the best course of action for them (or Debian, or anyone else) is with OpenAL.
