My understanding, from Martin, myself and Vivian, is that neither
Benoit's patch, or Yon's introduce any known problems at all, and both
have had pretty extensive testing at this point.

This is a situation when having a release branch for 1.9.x would make
sense, but I understand that nobody really wants to get into merging
and branch maintenance while we're still in CVS land (myself very much
included!) My feeling is we should strive to keep trunk open for
commits, since as Martin noted, there is a chilling effect is patches
go un-applied for months at a time.

Maybe in this instance we really do need to bite the bullet and make a
1.9 branch, from the tag, and apply just Tim's fixed to that branch
(plus any others). It's Fred and Tat who incur the most additional
work from that approach, I guess (having to tweak scripts to pull the
correct branch).

And then we should seriously consider moving to git ASAP. Not just
talking about it, but actually do it, at least for the source.

Happy new year, may it bring less bugs, more releases and better
flying for all :)

James
