In a standard rate turn in a C172, defined as 180 degrees/min (2 minute turn) 
the silhouette on the indicator will be pegged on about 20 degrees.
It only really shows the rate of turn. The Bank angle itself is not an accurate 
indication. Older instruments will only actually take into account yaw, a newer 
turn indicator also includes the roll rate in its interpretation of the 
situation. 

You can fool a turn indicator into showing a higher bank angle than the actual 
angle. 
Get into a standard rate turn, keep the wings pegged at 20 degrees and increase 
the G-Loading with a backpressure and throttle. Although your wings are still 
at 20 degrees it will show a higher angle as the RATE of turn is more than a 
standard 180 degrees/minute. 

Trevor Thom never mentioned that till about book 12 I think it was, but still 
my instructor used to drill it in ;)
