Another point in favor of .dds textures. They might be larger on disk, but can 
be compressed further by any archiver thus decreasing the package size, making 
it better for downloading. Png's as far as I know don't get compressed 
further.
size test:

iar80 base texture:
png texture: size on disk 8.1MB  -> targzipped size 8.1MB
dds texture: size on disk 21.3 MB -> targzipped size 4.5MB

complete IAR80 package:
png textures: IAR80 zip size: 45MB
dds textures: IAR80 zip size: 31.1MB

(can be reduced further as not all the textures were converted so far).
