The download size is very small ! It would not faze me one bit if the base package was 1 GB in size. It can only get bigger (and better!) as the project moves forwards.
Eventually FlightGear will become (if it is not already :-) ubiquitous, and the number of aircraft models will be so numerous to even consider storing in one place anywhere. Right now, Dave Culp has a "hangar" where some aircraft are stored (complete with FDM and 3D model). I don't think his is the only one. To me, it would make sense to include a sensibly wide variety of types, and of only the highest quality where possible. Then, begin publicizing the various hangar URLs.
