I'd like to think that my Fedora Core 2 distribution
doesn't behave this way. Using top and ps commands,
can't see any obvious culprits. I just disabled
/net/nfs automounts (/etc/init.d/autofs stop), which
I'd hoped were the problem. Sputter still there.

I'm not quite at sys admin level with linux, so I
could probably ask the tech support (here at work) if
any 20-sec processes may be the problem. Not sure
they'll appreciate helping me to debug flight
simulator woes.

I run autofs here ... that's pretty light weight so I wouldn't expect that to be the problem. Do you see HD activity that corresponds with the 20-sec interval glitch? You might take a look at your log files in /var/log to see if they are accumulating anything ... sometimes an overabundance of logging can slow down a system ... they might also point to some error or problem if there is excessive logging. I'd also try quiting as many other apps as possible to see if you can make the problem go away ... quit your web browser, email client, word processor, etc. If your desktop has some sort of toolbar (likely) try killing all those little applets. (You may want to create a stripped down dummy account so you don't hose your own configuration.) CD player? USB devices? etc. Start stripping down the system piece by piece and see if you can get rid of the 20-sec glitch with a totally stripped down system. Then you can start adding things back in to see if you can find the culprit.

Since I'm running linux, surely there's an answer...
Hate to think I'd be better off with Windoze.

Some people are better off with windows, some people aren't. When I have my FlightGear hat on, I try to avoid making specific suggestions. :-) I will say that I have had really great luck with Linux personally.

Curt.
