OK, here's what I have so far:

I'm still learning, so please bear with me :)  In the MDL format  each surface 
is its own object.  I used AC3D to merge the objects on top of the right wing 
wing into a single object, called rightwingtop.  Then I set the surface type 
to "smooth" for this object.  I did the same for the right tip tank, calling 
it righttank.

I've always wanted to be able to convert from MDL to AC properly, so this is 
progress.  These are the steps, so far:

1)  use threedconvert to convert from MDL to AC3D

2)  use AC3D to merge surfaces (in MDL they are objects) into objects, and set 
the surface type to "smooth".


Note that the textures were lost.  AC3D couldn't load the original BMP 
textures because they are not 24 bit.
