You could also try socat.  It is great little tool for connecting
different devices on UNIX together.  You can create a "psuedo"
serialport on one side and a pipe on the other.  The documentation is
pretty good, I think one of the examples addresses what you need to
do.  This may allow you to ditch gpsd.
