This exact thing happened to me. Same PCI Express bus, same NVidia GeForce 6600 chip, same (old) driver version, same symptom. > But ... yesterday I installed the latest NVIDIA-7667 driver and now > Flightgear works perfectly well on this system ! I did upgrade the driver, but I added more memory to the system, as I noticed FlightGear eats hundreds of megs of VM when running.
