I wouldn't be surprised if that would work, but I haven't dug into the beacon code to try to understand how it is implimented. I've just been content to enjoy the end result since it works so nicely. It's pretty easy to replace the point light code at run time when the models are loaded, so I can point you in the right direction if you want to fiddle around and see if your beacon code can be adapted to this.
