Hello Arnt: Getting very positive now.
The Toshiba: Yes, can just manage to understand text etc, but not bright and very dull. Also it seems like the primary colours are not configured or mixed correctly i.e. definitely not sharp! It is certainly not the same as The PC, which follows. The PC: Yes, the boot messages scrolls by. OK, let's go back to the Knoppix F3 screen. The problem was typing (automatically) in capitals. Typing knoppix screen=1280x1024 vsync=60 hsync=80 allowed the CD to boot with NO problem at all. >From Root Shell I typed in 'glxinfo' and amongst all the lines of text there >was "OpenGL Renderer String: MESA GLX Indirect" This was the nearest text to >direct rendering Yes or No etc. I used 'lspci', 'dmesg' and 'lsmod', but the >text lines were far to long to copy etc. However, using 'cat /proc/cmdline' >the following was returned: ramdisc_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us >apm=power-off vga=791 initrd=minirt.gz nomce quiet >BOOT_IMAGE=knoppixBOOT_IMAGE=linux vsync=85 hsync=78'. There was no white box with the out of range text etc within it. The boot process and the closing down sequence were faultless. I had more opportunity to study the screen and see what's there, as well as how the files and folders came together. I wanted to change the clock for French time, but the system asks for a password!!!. I found the files and folders and programmes already on the PC, including FlightGear, but for the present could not launch it. I have certainly made some progress today and, I am not someone out to prove Windows against alternative operating systems etc. This is something very new for me and in my late 50's, so this will give you an idea of what I was brough up with. Both my science degrees were without calculators, as computers were not in existence then. This is refreshing and very interesting and stimulating for me. (Yes or no) > The PC: Booting with the CD I get the Welcome to the Knoppix Live. > and the booting sequence ..you can _see_ the boot message texts scrolling by? Now, we make do with Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-F3 or Ctrl-Alt-F4 to get to one of these 4 cyan root consoles. > > > > > ..in the cli/xterm/"DOS Window", first type "glxinfo" (NOT > > > > > GLXINFO!). A little > later I get the female voice Initiating start up sequence and then > nothing more happens. From this point you cannot take out the CD nor > switch off the PC. It has to be disconnected from the mains > electricity. .. ;o) The smooth talking lass tells us everything works as it should, except we see nothing on your screen and I gather that you got that message from "the little white box with Input signal out of range", too. ..the easiest way to shut down a badly behaving Knoppix, is Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill X, then on the cyan console prompt Ctrl-Alt-Delete. It will promt you for cd removal, unless you run from sonething other than the cd or tell it "noeject". ..now if you could see the boot messages, kill X or, if you wanna let it live for eg pasifist reasons ;o) , hit Ctrl-Alt-F4 to get to one of 4 cyan root consoles, Alt-F5 or Alt-F7 takes you back into X. Handy to fix minor stuff. ..if you wanna "play it safe", try "xmodule=svga", Knoppix will try vesa last before giving up, and that _may_ be a problem here. Neither vesa nor svga will do OpenGL, but we're not there yet anyway. > I have read what is on F3, but it does not recognise the information > from the Cheat codes .."cat /proc/cmdline" will tell us _precicely_ how your boot command was _read_, dmesg and the other log stuff will tell us what etc, and _how_ it was _understood_ and _acted_upon_. ;o) ..one possible reason is using CAPITAL CASE LETTERS and not lower case letters, these are very different in our unix tradition, Microsoft differ here in not distinguishing between these 2 VERY different cases. > - screen=1280x1024 Use specified > Screen resolution for X knoppix xvrefresh=60 (or vsync=60) Use 60 Hz > vertical refresh rate for X knoppix xhrefresh=80 (or hsync=80) Use 80 > kHz horizontal refresh rate for X knoppix. ..another very possible case is we push your iron "too hard": Try the other boot options, such as "fb1280x1024", so you can _see_ what happens. (Nope, that mode won't do FG, but it will do for diagnosis) > It is a new HP PC and flat screen and the drivers were verified as > up-to-date. For this 17 monitor, it must be set at [EMAIL PROTECTED] > <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> . Which, I believe, knoppix is already set > for. ..AFAIK, it defaults to [EMAIL PROTECTED], so it will need to know what you want either from an usb key, boot server or boot floppy or some slave typing in the boot command. ;o) > The other two laptops are currently in use, but lets get these two > organised first of all. .. ;o) For a nice step by step Knoppix boot, try "expert". ..if any of this sound less than structured and confusing, keep in mind there are more ways to do stuff, so no worries, my gasifier work shop is drying up quite nicely from the wee flash flood I got in yesterday, so I think I've earned catching up a coupla nights sleep now. ;o) -- ..med vennlig hilsen = with Kind Regards from Arnt... ;o) ...with a number of polar bear hunters in his ancestry... Scenarios always come in sets of three: best case, worst case, and just in case. _______________________________________________ Flightgear-users mailing list [email protected] http://mail.flightgear.org/mailman/listinfo/flightgear-users 2f585eeea02e2c79d7b1d8c4963bae2d
