Very good point. Your kernel might have been compiled with 3.3.x or 3.4.x and 
you might have gcc 3.4.x or 4.0.x installed.  3.3 and 3.4 generate binaries 
that are not compatible with each other.   I am not sure if this is also true 
for 3.4 and 4.0.  Make sure you have the "standard" version of the compiler 
for this distro installed.
