Forgot to mention,
it (GoogleEarth) certainly looked like something that would help me.
Google Earth is great, I am running it at home on my Desktop PC, however. Not all of the places are covered with the greatest of detail.....Auckland and parts of Wellington are the only decent regions you will get high quality images (at least better than some of the GPS systems I have used....), there is a part of the Nelson area that is covered nicely but Christchurch and the rest of the South Island are not covered. You can still get the elevation data but its hard to see where you are clicking as the resolution is really bad.
