Hi there,

I'd check...GPU fan, airflow around the GPU (80-way IDE ribbon
cables are good at blocking airflow). If everything hardware-wise
looks OK, then check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages. dmesg
on the console may reveal problems too...

If I can get to the console when I get problems! I will check old Xorg
logs, though, thanks for the tip. I keep forgetting about them.

Xorg, even when it starts successfully, will spew heaps of info
and warnings into its logfile, but when it does crash it usually
manages to at least write a few warnings or errors prior to the
X server going kaphut....

Brissie weather has been cooler, so I think climate is not a factor.

It might not be a factor, but I've only been in Queensland for two
years, and in Hobart cooling was, let us say, not a problem. I live

I've only lived in Brisbane less than 2 years, and came from across
'the ditch' in Christchurch NZ, where it is currently 8 C...probably
colder than Hobart!

out at Mt. Crosby, just north of Ipswich, where the climate is usually
slightly more extreme at both ends than Brisbane, so the stinking days

I'm only 15 minutes from Mt Crosby, in Indooroopilly. I work just to

are happening. I think the location of my tower has more to do with
impeding airflow than IDE cables do. I have a SATA hard drive, but I
also have a CD, a DVD, and two IDE hard drives. Methinks my problem
might be sustained load,

Cubby holes and computers often don't mix. My case is vented at the
bottom-front, rear, and also has ventilation holes at the side, so
it would not be wise of me to stuff it into a tight space...

Is your PSU of a high enough wattage to reliably feed that many
drives and the mobo? I've always overbudgeted on PSU, to ensure
the max load my computer will demand is well under the max rating
of the PSU.

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson, Brisbane, Australia.
