As for blender, I've run into one problem that I don't seem to be able
to solve on my own. How do I add a *single* vertex to a mesh in edit
mode? I've been lightly tinkering with blender for a few months, too,
but have yet to figure this out.

Ok, here is the answer from an absolute beginner (might be there are
many better ways!):
Blender 2.41
1. Edit Mode
2. Deselect all vertices ("A")
3. Select the edge you want to add one vertex to
(select both vertices with RMB click and SHIFT-RMB-click)
The two vertices are yellow as well as the edge (default Blender
colors)
4. "W"-key (or alternatively menu "mesh -> edges -> subdive)
select subdivide from the pop-up menu (for 1 new vertex)
select subdivide and number (for several new vertices)
5. "A"-key
6. Select vertex with RMB
7. Grab vertex/vertices to wished position/s
Hope this helps.
If anyone has a better way, please let me know, I want to learn a lot
about the basics of Blender!
