Hopefully others can answer with a fuller reply (I don't have any 
specific ATI experience myself.)  But this does very much sound like a 
driver issue.  Have you gone to the ATI web site and downloaded their 
latest drivers?  I wouldn't trust the laptop manufacturer's video 
drivers, I would go straight to the chipset vendor.
