My apologies. Your confusion is my fault. This is a case of trying to 
solve a minor problem & creating another bigger problem in the process.

I was able to call up aircraft from the command line as indicated above 
(but not from the .fgfsrc file).

After happily playing with various aircraft types (all started from the 
command line) I chose to save the last config from the menu (the one 
shown in your prior response).

Wanting to return to how I had been using FG last week, I tired to start 
up with just ./fgfs (no options), this always grabbed my .fgfsrc file & 
ran. Not this time. It throws the error I have described above.

Rename of autosav.xml, as you suggested, made no difference. Still 
throws the same error.

My rebuild was a side issue since I wanted to stay close to cvs ongoing 
devel. I had no troubles compiling FG after cvs update.

When I start FG from command line I get the splash screen & while its 
initializing it winks out, showing the error.

(I do have windows version installed on my laptop but runs at < 80 frame 
rates. Linux system averages about 150)
