UPDATE:

found it. Im going to get a verbal beating for this, but.....

My .fgfsrc file, for some reason, had for the scenery line:

.
.
--fg-scenery=/home/lvanek/FlightGear-0.9/data/WorldScener
--aircraft=pa24-250
.
.
==============
Note the missing "y" at the end of line. Apparently I had accidently 
deleted it when adding the "--aircraft=" line.

ALL IS WELL.
