I'm seeing 4000 - 7000 fps here with the nvidia drivers installed, so I will
suggest that you have software only opengl activated right now. If you are
running with the "nv" xorg driver, then you will not be able to run
FlightGear more than 1 frame every few seconds if at all.
It's about 10 minutes to download and install the nvidia drivers so I would
give that a try next. Then after you upgrade your kernel on the weekend,
just remember to reinstall the nvidia drivers since you'll probably need to
rebuild the kernel driver for the new kernel.
For whatever it's worth, I attempted to get an ATI PCI express video card
working in FC6 with FlightGear over the past couple weeks and I finally just
popped out the ATI card and put in an nVidia card, installed the nvidia
drivers and everything just works. Probably could have given the ATI card
a bit more effort, but from the stuff I could google, it looked like ATI
hadn't caught up to FC6 just yet ...
