One thing that I noticed with the previous poster was that he reported
running FlightGear on windows 2000.  That may change the equation
completely.  I seem to recall some howling years ago about MS not updating
their API past opengl 1.2 or some nonsense like that in order to promote
DirectX/3D.  Haven't heard anything on this topic for years so I assume it's
not an issue in XP or more modern MS OS's, but perhaps there is some legacy
effect going on here ... that users running XP or Vista wouldn't see ... (?)
