Consolidating everything to a single Scenery directory works even better in my
opinion -- in my case, c:\Program Files\Flightgear\data\Scenery, and in this
folder are the Terrain and Objects subfolders for the entire world (well, okay,
just the continental US and all of Europe). It makes it much less confusing to
find files for scenery modification purposes, including installing some of the
nice add-ons available in the forums! Cheers, -R.

Allen,
I'm not sure which manual you're reading, there are many...
You have to untar the scenery files. I prefer to use Total Commander
( http://www.ghisler.com/ ) for this purpose, but there are other tools
available. One user reported needing to rename the file w090n30.tar.gz
because whatever he was using didn't understand tgz is a shortened form
of tar.gz.
The untar should produce "Terrain" and "Object" folders. They go in
your scenery folder "C:\ProgramFiles\FlightGear\data\WorldScenery"
Make sure you have FG_SCENERY set to the appropriate value, e.g.
SET FG_SCENERY="c:\Program Files\FlightGear\data\Scenery";"c:\Program
Files\FlightGear\data\WorldScenery"
Hope this helps,
Ron
