Thanks, Ron,
I used the manual that was bundled with the FlightGear download that I 
made just two days ago. I assumed that it would be the latest. It 
mentioned not changing the file descriptor, .gz. I know just enough 
about the subject to suspect that .gz is a *nix file descriptor. but the 
manual did not give any hint of what you have told me, at least not in 
the part that I read.
I will try again this evening, using your info.
