I do not know.
I tried Greg's example and it works OK for me, I see the 4 Chinese
glyphs displayed correctly (well, it looks OK to me, but I do not
know...) Certainly they were not empty boxes...

What revision of fltk-2 are you using? Is it linked with XFT for font
support or is it using Xlib?

Might also be informative to run ldd on your application and see what
libs it is using, in case it is loading something unusual for the font
handling... Not sure...
