I experimented a bit with this. This is probably off-topic -- but I  
would mention that even though latency for VNC is better than what it  
used to be, I still found X11 to be a faster solution when I don't  
really need the whole desktop and just need to display one app  
remotely. If I always have focus on one app in VNC, the latency is  
comparable to X11 -- but that amounts to using VNC as an overkill  
anyway.

I was able to do this with fltk 1.1.4 with John Galeotti's help --  
thanks to everyone who replied.
