Aaron, you have a "workaround" for GL fonts with XFT on linux? What do you currently do? Also, have you looked at the experimental workaround I put in the fltk118-utf8 patch? How does that compare, does it work OK for you, or what changes does it need? Anyway, if there's a perceived need for this in the XFT builds, I'll try and find some time to work up a better version, and maybe a patch for the mainline 1.1.8 build too.
