If the characters are to be viewed from a large distance, you get better results by setting your monitor to a very coarse resolution, say 640x480 or maybe even worse. This instantly makes your characters bigger and bolder. And from long distance the user can not observe the coarseness of the pixels and it all looks fine. This is what most public display systems do anyway.
