Apparently that's what the drugs are for.
Or so I glean from VH-1 specials on the mixing sessions of famous rap
and rock records.
I seem to remember one producer saying there was such a cloud of pot
smoke and cocaine dust in the mixing room, the mix board looked like
landing at LA airport on a foggy night.

..if by "higher abstraction" you mean "stronger drugs",
that might indeed be the case. ;)
Kidding aside, I don't find myself defending this kind of design
(mass overloads of widgets) very often, but in some cases it's
really the situation calls for, especially real time stuff like
show control and audio/video production.
But as a general rule, yeah, it's usually wrong.
