Yeah, the mixing board thing is a tricky case, because you'd rather
have a physical input device, but don't because of lack of space /
money.  But really, dedicated knob boxes are not that expensive (well,
many actually are, but I'll bet there are some cheap ones out there)
and if I were designing a realtime show control app of that nature I
might just require one of those.  I know at the least I'd think very
carefully before falling back on the wall of pictures of knobs.

Maybe someday multitouch will be everywhere and cheap.

As far as audio production, I know it's traditional to do that in
realtime, but I wonder whether it isn't just because some people got
used to it back in the days when you had no other choice?  I find it
entertaining but also kind of distressing when entirely digital
systems advertise "automation" with animated knobs and everything as a
new fancy feature.
