That was what I expected too, but it didn't actually work. Remember that the ld on OSX is Apple's ld, not gnu ld, so it is "differently capable" in many ways - this may explain why it wouldn't link. Or maybe I just didn't poke it in the right way... Doesn't really matter, as I was only playing around to investigate Michael's original question, and I think we have turned up a couple of answers that will work for his use case.
