No idea; for what it is worth, I've used fltk succesfully with 8-bit and 16-bit 
colour depths on "conventional" X11 servers in the past and it has Just Worked.

I do wonder if the Xxlib stuff is doig something "unexpected" that a real 
server would not do?

Have you tried running a proper X server, like tiny-x or something, instead to 
see how it behaves? It might be easier than struggling to get a non-standard 
server runing in your application.
