That sounds about right - fltk-1.3 expects to be able to use XFT by default 
(though you can turn that off at configure time by passing in --disable-xft) so 
once Fontconfig and XFT are in place all should be well - let's hope!

It's a shame you are constrained to using Nxlib etc., as I do feel that makes 
your job harder than is necessary these days...

Anyway, hope things are going smoothly now!
