I've been lurking around the Fluxlist for the last year; have entered into a
couple of strings, and never started one before, but i have a question for
the Brit members:
There's a review published in this month's (January 2001) Art Newspaper,
written by one Adrian Danant anc claiming to be a review of three exhibits
of the work of Adrian Piper. He doesn't have much to say about her work in
this review: mostly he restricts himself to contesting her claim to an
african-american racial identity. He says that she's a white woman passing
for black, as a kind of careerist ruse. I've considered the possibility that
this is a kind of tasteless joke, but maybe it's not. Do any of the Brit
members of this group know mister Dannant, and is he certifiable? I assume
that he couldn't possibly be an american and as clueless about issues of
racial history and identity as he appears to be, but maybe that's just
wishful thinking, given the results of the last election.
In any case, could various of you please look at the offending article, and
reply, telling me that either Dannant is a known problem, or that I'm being
oversensitive, here?
