hello, Patricia,
The library I work for (Illinois State University) gets the Art Newspaper in
paper form, so I've never tried to access their web version. Dannant's rant
is an assault, and is so excessive that it won't hurt Piper. Her work is so
nuanced, subtle and self-critical, it just baffles me that guys like Dannant
(which is to say, boobs) find it so easy to read her as an opportunistic
bully. And honest to god, D. references Norman Mailer's "The White Negro" as
a primary text on the culture of race. The last person I remember mentioning
that text was Eldridge Cleaver, back some thirty years ago. Since D.'s other
outside reference was to 70's rap (Cypress Hill, Grandmaster Flash) it made
me wonder if maybe he was from elsewhere, like Australia, or Mars.
This is a lot of criticism for an article you haven't been able to read.
I'll see what I can do about getting you a web link.
Tim
