Alan,

You can repair your XP install and thus retain all files and settings whilst
putting a fresh copy of XP on your machine.

Just boot from your XP install CD and select the repair option rather than a
normal install, this will retain all your files and settings.
XP is drivel but this feature actually works pretty well. I've used it on
several occasions, especially when I hacked my login screen in a somewhat
carefree manner with bizarre conseqeunces!
