yes, blender is about 4-5 times faster. it is possible that they don't use arrays or elements, but display the faces individually, in which case they don't need to convert the indices. we should check this, though.How does this compare to the speed that (for example) blender takes to load the same file? It's pretty quick isn't it, from what I remember? Do you think we are doing something wrong...
