Marc,
I guess you just should user the [ORACLE8I] writer to solve your problem,
as we do to run FME translations to 8.1.7. and 9i databases.
You proved the correct setup of your Oracle / Unix environment by succesfully using the ora8ilist.exe.
This executable also uses the oci library, so the connection to the database should not be the problem.
