Hi Geoff,
A timely question. One thing I am thinking of doing is creating a 
small set of basic workspaces that folk can use to benchmark FME on 
their PC. If we get a good number of results it'll be easy to see 
just how much better the higher options are and to gauge how good 
your setup is. 

eg - my first workspace takes 25' 02" on my 1.6Ghz/512mb PC, whereas 
the ones in the training room (2.8ghz, 1gb) take 13' 20".

Keep an eye on fmepedia.com for when I get time to do this (maybe 
early next week).
