I think the official Safe line is hand-edit a workspace at your own risk! I'm told the 'mapping file' part gets refreshed whenever you run the workspace so there's no point editing that. The XML part can be edited (I've done it once) but make a backup first cause it is easy to get wrong and difficult to fix.
